How Facebook protected Tunisian users from their government

Posted by agaffin , 24 January 2011 · 159 views

The Atlantic has an interesting report on how Tunisians turned to Facebook for news about unrest in their country - both to read and to broadcast - and how Facebook took steps to keep them out of the clutches of government security forces trying to hack their accounts.

After more than ten days of intensive investigation and study, Facebook's security team realized something very, very bad was going on. The country's Internet service providers were running a malicious piece of code that was recording users' login information when they went to sites like Facebook.

Facebook responded with https connnections from Tunisia and a challenge/response login system in which users had to identify people in photos of their friends.
