Gawker's mess

Posted by agaffin , 13 December 2010 · 145 views

Seems Nick Denton's Gawker Media didn't do such a hot job of protecting its user database.

Last week, hackers made off with 1.5 million or so user login records. Some are encrypted, but apparently not so well and now Twitter's being inundated with spam from accounts that used the same password on both Gawker and Twitter. And U.S. government officials are worried the Gawker data could be used for attacks on government sites, thanks to workers using the same passwords for leaving snarky comments on posts on Gawker sites, which also include Deadspin, Kotaku, Io9, Jezebel, Jalopnik, Gizmodo and Lifehacker.
