Linux Era in China

Posted by Jingtian , 19 October 2008 · 125 views

October 20, 2008 marks the beginning of the Linux era in China.

Microsoft is cracking down on piracy in China. It is said that users of pirate copies of Windows and Office will get "black screen" on desktop once an hour. Before that, the site owner of "tomato garden", a famous site that offers pirate Windows download, is arrested.

At the same time, Microsoft is giving very good offers in the China. Last week, I saw that Office 2003 Student and Family, which contains Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, is sold at only ¥199, about $29.15.

Some people have become legal users, some hang on to pirate software, but a lot of users are trying to explore other operating systems, like Linux. Ubuntu, the most user-friendly Linux, attracts a lot of attention. You can see it is discussed everywhere on the Internet.

Will Microsoft profit from it, or it will lose market share?
